Perfect for pretend kitchen play

Bring water to a boil in a large pot over medium heat. Measure carefully using a measuring cup so the dough doesn’t become sticky.
In a large bowl, combine all dry ingredients. Stir well to evenly distribute the salt and cream of tartar.
Add vegetable oil or olive oil to the dry mixture. Stir in food coloring or food dye until you reach your desired “cheese sauce” shade. For a true mac and cheese look, mix yellow with a small drop of orange.
Slowly pour the boiling water into the bowl while stirring continuously. The mixture will come together quickly.
Transfer the mixture back into the large pot and cook over medium heat. Stir constantly for 2–3 minutes until the dough pulls away from the sides and forms a ball.
Place the dough onto a cookie sheet to cool slightly. Once safe to touch, knead until smooth and soft. This step ensures the perfect texture.
To create different colors for Play-Doh “mac” and “cheese,” divide the dough into portions and add food coloring while kneading. You can make:
Classic yellow cheese
Orange cheddar
White “alfredo”
Even fun rainbow batches
Each new batch can be stored separately for future play.
For best results, store the Play-Doh in an airtight container or Ziploc bag. When sealed properly, it will last a long time, often several weeks.
If it feels slightly dry the next day, add a drop of olive oil and knead. If it feels sticky, sprinkle in a tiny bit of flour.
