Looking for a free you’ve been booed printable to start a little Halloween fun in your neighborhood? You’re in the right place!
I love little holiday traditions that make the kids excited but don’t require a ton of planning from me. And “booing” your neighbors is exactly that. You put together a boo basket with a few Halloween treats, leave it secretly on a neighbor’s doorstep, ring the doorbell, and run!
The kids think the sneaking-away part is hilarious, and I love that it’s a simple way to spread a little Halloween cheer around the neighborhood.
I created these free printables so you can start the tradition without having to make your own signs. Print the pages, put together a boo bag or basket, and you’re ready to go.

What Does “You’ve Been Boo’ed” Mean?
If you’ve never heard of this tradition before, it’s basically a Halloween version of a secret gift exchange.
You put together a small boo gift for a neighbor, friend, or family member. Then you secretly leave it at their front door with a “You’ve Been Boo’ed” sign and instructions.
Once someone has been boo’ed, they can put the boo sign in their front window so everyone knows their house has already received a surprise.
Then it’s their turn to boo someone else.
Before long, you may start seeing the signs pop up all over the whole neighborhood.
It’s such a fun Halloween tradition, especially if you have younger kids. They get to pick out the treats, help make the basket, and then try to sneak away from the neighbor’s doorstep without getting caught.
That last part is usually the best part!
How to Boo Your Neighbors
This really doesn’t have to be complicated.
First, choose a neighbor, friend, or family member from your friend group that you want to surprise.
Next, grab a Halloween bucket, gift bag, basket, or even a simple paper bag. Fill it with whatever fun surprises you think they’ll enjoy.
Print your You’ve Been Boo’ed pages and place them inside.
Then wait until your neighbors are home, sneak over to their house, leave the surprise on the neighbor’s doorstep, ring the doorbell, and RUN!
Obviously, make sure you’re being safe, and that little kids have an adult with them.
The goal is to leave a spooky surprise without getting caught.
It’s silly, simple, and so much fun.
What Should You Put in a Boo Basket?
This is where you can really make the tradition your own.
Your boo bucket can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. You definitely don’t need to spend a lot of money.
I usually think a mixture of something sweet and one or two little Halloween items makes a cute basket.
Need some treat inspiration? I put together a whole list of easy Halloween snacks for kids with fun ideas you could make for your boo basket or Halloween party.
Some easy ideas include:
- Light-up fidget spinners
Homemade cookies
Brownies
Rice Krispie treats
Mini chocolate bars
Gummy worms
Halloween Oreos
Popcorn
Fruit snacks
If you like baking, homemade treats or other homemade goodies make the basket feel extra special. Just make sure you know the family well enough to be aware of any food allergies before including homemade food.
You could also add little gift tags to individual treats if you want to make everything look extra cute. You can sign them “your neighbor.”
But again, don’t overthink it.
An inexpensive Halloween bucket filled with a few sweet treats and the printable is plenty.

Boo Basket Ideas for Younger Kids
If you’re booing a family with younger children, skip anything too scary and keep it cute.
You could add Halloween coloring pages, crayons, bubbles, Play-Doh, stickers, fruit snacks, mini pumpkins, or little Halloween books.
You could even print my free mummy template and add it with a few crayons or craft supplies for another inexpensive Halloween activity.
This can also be a fun activity for your own kids.
Let them help choose everything that goes inside. Mine always have very strong opinions about which candy and toys other kids need!
You could even have them decorate the basket themselves.
It might not look perfect, but that’s part of the fun.
Boo Basket Ideas for Older Kids
Older kids can be a little trickier, but you definitely don’t have to stop the tradition once the kids are out of the preschool stage.
Try filling a gift basket with their favorite candy, chips, soda, popcorn, fuzzy socks, card games, or a small gift card.
For teenagers, you could even make a Halloween movie-night basket with popcorn, candy, drinks, and a spooky movie suggestion.
It doesn’t need to feel babyish.
The same idea works; you’re just changing what goes inside.
Can You Boo Friends Instead of Neighbors?
Of course!
You don’t need to live in a huge neighborhood for this to work.
Boo your best friend, cousins, grandparents, classmates, or another family you know.
You could even do it within a small friend group and have everyone secretly choose another family.
If you live farther apart, you don’t necessarily have to ring the doorbell and run either. Leave the basket by their door and text them afterward to check outside.
The tradition is really just about doing something unexpected and kind during the Halloween season.
Start a Neighborhood Boo Tradition
If your neighborhood has never done this before, you can be the one to start it.
That’s one reason I included instructions with the free you’ve been booed printable. The person receiving the basket doesn’t need to already know how it works.
They get their treats, display their sign, and then choose another house to surprise.
It’s a great way to get families involved without having to organize an actual event.
There’s no sign-up sheet.
No one has to host anything.
And you don’t need to coordinate schedules.
You simply leave a surprise and let the tradition continue.
If enough families participate, it becomes really fun for the kids to walk around and see which houses have a You’ve Been Boo’ed sign displayed.
Make It Part of Your October Traditions
We have so many traditions around Christmas, but I think October deserves some of its own.
Between pumpkin carving, Halloween movies, decorating, trick-or-treating, and baking Halloween treats, there are so many simple ways to make the season special for kids.

Booing your neighbors is one of those holiday traditions that doesn’t take much effort but creates a memory.
You can do it once at the beginning of October or make it something your family looks forward to every year.
You could even pair it with a family Halloween movie night afterward.
Put together the basket, deliver it, run home before you get caught, make some popcorn, and watch a Halloween movie.

Use the Printable for a Halloween Party, Too
You don’t have to use these pages only for neighborhood booing.
The idea can easily be adapted for a Halloween party, classroom group, sports team, church group, or family gathering.

There are plenty of big, expensive things we can do during the holiday season, but sometimes the traditions kids remember are the really simple ones.
A plastic pumpkin filled with candy.
Sneaking down the sidewalk after dark.
Trying not to laugh while waiting for someone to open their door.
Running home because you’re convinced the neighbors saw you.
That’s what makes this such a fun tradition.
It’s not about creating the perfect basket. It’s about having fun together and doing something nice for somebody else.
