23 Creative Family Halloween Costume Ideas
One of my favorite things about family Halloween costumes is that there really aren’t any rules. You can go all out with elaborate homemade costumes or choose a theme and put together something surprisingly simple.
The families below came up with some incredibly creative ideas. I’ve linked their Instagram accounts as well, so make sure you check them out and give them some love!
1. Lord and Lady of the Bats
Jenna Sue from Jenna Sue Design created one of the spookier family costumes on this list with her Lord and Lady of the Bats theme.
The adults’ dramatic costumes are perfect for Halloween, but it’s their little bat that makes this family costume especially adorable.
This would be such a fun idea for a family with a baby or toddler because you can make the child’s costume the centerpiece while the adults coordinate around it.
Make it your own: Black clothing, dramatic makeup, capes, bat wings, and a cute little bat costume are all you need to create your own version.
2. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Tammy and her family created an adorable costume inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas.
There are so many characters to choose from that this theme works especially well as a family costume. You could include Jack Skellington, Sally, Oogie Boogie, Zero, the Mayor, and more.
Tammy added an especially cute twist by dressing her little one as Santa Claus!
Tip: This is one of those family costumes that can easily grow with your family. Just add another character for every person joining the group.
3. Where The Wild Things Are
Brittany Jepsen from The House That Lars Built brought the classic children’s book Where the Wild Things Are to life with her family’s Halloween costumes.
I love this one because it feels completely different from the typical superhero or Disney family costume.
Max’s crown and the recognizable Wild Things make this especially fun for families who love children’s books.
Make it your own: Start with Max and then let everyone else choose a different Wild Thing. It’s an especially cute costume idea for families with younger children.
4. The Villains
Nuha from Devotedly Yours proves that sometimes it’s more fun to dress as the villains!
A villains theme is also one of the easiest ideas to adapt for a large family Halloween costume because there are so many characters to choose from.
Everyone gets to choose a completely different character while the costumes still look coordinated when you’re all standing together.
Make it your own: Pick your favorite movie villains or Disney villains, or mix characters from several different stories. The joker is always a classic.
5. Ratatouille
Jennifer Buckingham and her family came up with one of the cutest Disney family costume ideas on this list: Ratatouille!
The best part has to be the littlest member of the family dressed as Remy. A baby dressed as a tiny chef-loving rat? Come on. It’s adorable.
This theme is especially good for families with a baby or toddler because the adults can dress as chefs while the youngest family member becomes Remy.
Make it your own: Add chef hats, aprons, wooden spoons, cooking utensils, and a Remy costume to make the theme instantly recognizable.
6. Minions
Sammy Barcelos from Momma’s Gang dressed her children as a group of adorable little Minions, and it’s one of those costume ideas that works especially well with several kids.
And let’s face it, a whole group of little Minions walking around the neighborhood on Halloween is pretty hard to beat.
Make it your own: Yellow shirts, denim overalls, Minion goggles, and black gloves can help you create the look without making every costume complicated.
7. 101 Dalmatians
Kerrie Charlotte from Twin Momma Mullings created an adorable 101 Dalmatians family costume.
This is another fantastic choice if you have several children because the more little Dalmatians you have, the better the costume gets!
The spotted outfits and puppy ears make the children’s costumes instantly recognizable, while the adults can take on some of the other characters from the movie.
Make it your own: White clothes, black spots, puppy ears, and a little face paint can transform the kids into Dalmatians. Don’t forget Cruella!
8. Hubba Bubba
Now this is a family costume I never would have thought of!
Marissa Robles from Ambusheed With Boys created a costume inspired by Hubba Bubba bubble gum, and it is such a fun example of thinking outside the usual Halloween themes.
If you want a unique family Halloween costume that people probably won’t see three more times while trick-or-treating, this is a great source of inspiration.
Make it your own: Think about nostalgic candy, snacks, toys, or brands your whole family recognizes and turn them into a costume theme.
9. The Wizard of OZ
The Wizard of Oz is a classic for a reason.
Amy from Styled in Motherhood dressed her family as characters from the movie, and there are so many fun details you can add to this theme.
Dorothy’s ruby slippers, the Cowardly Lion’s mane, the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and other recognizable characters make the group look fantastic together.
Make it your own: Let each family member choose their favorite character. You can even include your dog as Toto!
10. Flintstones
Paulette from PauletteDotCom went all out with this adorable Flintstones-inspired family costume.
The Stone Age clothing is fun enough on its own, but the little details really make this costume. I especially love the bone in her daughter’s hair!
The Flintstones is also a great choice for a smaller family because Fred, Wilma, Pebbles, and Bamm-Bamm give you several instantly recognizable combinations.
Make it your own: Add chunky jewelry, animal-print fabrics, a bright wig, or a giant bone to complete your prehistoric look.
11. The Adams Family
Is there a family more appropriate for Halloween than The Addams Family?
Karmin from Little Hidden Forest didn’t stop at the costumes either. The spooky porch decorations surrounding the family made the entire theme come together.
Wednesday, Morticia, Gomez, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, and the rest of the Addams crew give larger families plenty of characters to choose from.
Make it your own: Stick with a black-and-white color palette and add pale makeup, braids, suits, long black dresses, and other gothic details.
12. Ghostbusters
Melissa from A Little Story Photography absolutely nailed this Ghostbusters family costume.
The jumpsuits and proton packs already make the theme recognizable, but I especially love how she incorporated ghosts using balloons. Such a clever detail!
This would be a really fun costume for families who want something nostalgic without being too scary for younger kids.
Make it your own: Start with matching Ghostbusters jumpsuits and add DIY proton packs, ghost balloons, or a little Slimer.
13. Harry Potter
Harry Potter is practically made for a large family Halloween costume.
Dede from Days With Dede put together an entire Harry Potter-themed family, complete with some amazing little details.
With students, professors, villains, magical creatures, and other characters to choose from, you can easily find a role for every member of a big family.
Make it your own: Robes, striped scarves, glasses, wands, ties, and a sorting hat can go a long way toward creating the Hogwarts look.
14. Fast Food
This one makes me smile every time.
Regan Pearl and her family dressed as an entire fast-food meal! The adults became French fries and a burger, their dog was a hot dog, and their twins dressed as mustard and ketchup.
It’s funny, colorful, and completely unexpected.
Make it your own: Don’t leave the family dog out! Hot dogs, ketchup, mustard, fries, burgers, pizza, and other foods give you plenty of characters for a larger family.
15. Día de Muertos (Day of the Death)
Kathryn and her family created a beautiful family look inspired by Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.
Their colorful clothing, floral details, and intricate face painting created a striking family look.
Día de los Muertos is a Mexican tradition honoring loved ones who have died, so if you’re drawing inspiration from its imagery, it’s worth learning about the meaning and traditions behind the celebration rather than treating it simply as a spooky Halloween theme.
16. Mario Bros.
Georgie and Callie Mae brought the colorful world of Super Mario Bros. to Halloween.
This is such a fun theme because there are so many recognizable characters: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser, and more.
That also makes it easy to adapt for families of different sizes.
Make it your own: Let everyone choose their favorite character and add a few recognizable accessories like Mario and Luigi hats, mustaches, crowns, or Yoshi details.

Kristen Scaravaglione and her family dressed as characters from Disney and Pixar’s Luca, and the finished family costume is adorable.

And we’ve reached my personal favorite! This may be one of the most creative themes on the entire list.
Kassandra from Kasstastic and her family didn’t choose characters from one movie. Instead, they each became a different Jim Carrey character!
Their lineup included characters inspired by The Grinch, Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, and more.
It’s such a clever way to create a coordinated family costume without everyone coming from the exact same movie.
Make it your own: You could use the same concept with another actor, movie franchise, or collection of characters your family loves.
20. Spider Family
Carmela from Mela Castle took the superhero family costume to another level with her spider-themed crew.
Not only did the family coordinate their outfits, but even their car became part of the theme!

Ashley and Nora Kate embraced Disney’s Frozen for their family costume and even found roles for the baby and dog.
The baby dressed as Olaf is absolutely adorable, while their dog joined the fun as Sven.

Terry Tin from It’s Terry Berry and the family dressed as their favorite Disney snacks!
Instead of choosing Disney characters, they turned iconic park foods into costumes. I especially love the Disney pretzel.
It’s funny, creative, and a great example of how you can take something your family loves and turn it into a completely original Halloween theme.
Make it your own: Think Mickey pretzels, popcorn, churros, Mickey ice cream bars, Dole Whip, or other favorite theme-park treats.
23. Encanto
Stephanie Sussex and her family dressed as characters from Disney’s Encanto, and I absolutely love how the entire family came together.
Mirabel and Bruno are especially adorable, but what makes this costume work so well is seeing all the different characters together.
Encanto has such a large cast that it’s also an excellent costume idea for bigger families.
Make it your own: Let everyone choose the Madrigal family member they identify with most. The different colors and styles of each costume make the final family picture especially fun.
