Easy Unicorn Frappuccino Recipe (DIY Starbucks Copycat)

14

If there was ever a Starbucks drink made for social media, it was this Easy Unicorn Frappuccino Recipe. Between the bright pink color, those gorgeous blue swirls, and a huge pile of whipped cream on top, this drink was basically made to be photographed.

Unfortunately, it didn’t stick around on the Starbucks menu for long.

The good news? You can make your own Unicorn Frappuccino at home, and it’s actually a lot easier than you might think.

This Unicorn Frappuccino recipe is creamy, fruity, colorful, and just plain fun. It combines a sweet mango frappuccino with a tangy blue drizzle to recreate the sweet-and-sour flavor of the original drink.

And while it looks impressive, you definitely don’t need to be one of the Starbucks baristas to pull it off!

It’s such a fun drink to make for birthday parties, sleepovers, summer afternoons, or anytime your kids ask for something a little extra magical.

What Was the Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino?

The original Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino was one of those drinks that practically took over the internet overnight.

Starbucks released the colorful drink for a very limited time in April 2017, and suddenly it seemed like everyone on social media had one.

The drink started with a sweet pink mango crème Frappuccino and was finished with a contrasting sour blue drizzle. The coolest part was that the colors and flavors changed as you stirred everything together.

It was sweet, fruity, tart, creamy, and definitely unlike anything else on the Starbucks menu.

Since you can’t just walk into Starbucks and order one anymore, making one of the many homemade versions is the next best thing.

And I have to admit, making all those colorful layers at home might be even more fun.

There are plenty of reasons to make this one at least once!

  • Kids love it. It’s colorful, sweet, and feels like something you would order at a fancy café.

  • You control the ingredients. Add more fruit, tone down the sweetness, or experiment with natural colors.

  • It’s perfect for parties. A homemade Unicorn Frappe would be adorable for a unicorn birthday party.

Ingredients You'll Need

Ingredients for a homemade unicorn frappuccino including frozen mango, milk, vanilla ice cream, mango syrup, white chocolate chips, food coloring, and whipped cream.

The full measurements are included in the recipe card below, but here’s what you’ll need to make this copycat drink.

For the Pink Mango Frappuccino

Mango pieces: Frozen mango gives our drink that fruity mango flavor while also helping make it thick and icy.

Whole milk: I like whole milk because it gives the frappuccino a richer, creamier consistency.

Vanilla ice cream: A little vanilla ice cream makes this homemade version extra creamy. It’s not exactly how Starbucks made the original, but it works beautifully at home.

Ice cubes: These give you that classic thick and frosty frappuccino texture.

Mango syrup: A little mango syrup intensifies the mango flavor and adds sweetness.

Pink food coloring: You only need a tiny amount of pink food coloring to get that unmistakable unicorn pink.

For the Blue Drizzle

White chocolate chips: Melted white chocolate chips create a creamy base for our blue syrup.

Blue food coloring: A drop or two of blue food coloring creates that electric blue color.

Citric acid: This is the secret to getting some of the tangy flavor that made the original Starbucks drink so interesting. You only need a tiny amount of citric acid.

Warm milk: A little warm milk helps thin the melted white chocolate into a smooth drizzle that can run down the sides of your glass.

For Topping

Whipped cream: Because would it really be a Frappuccino without a giant swirl of whipped cream?

You can also add colorful sprinkles, edible glitter, pink sugar, or blue sugar on top.

How to Make a Unicorn Frappuccino

Step-by-step photos showing how to make a unicorn frappuccino with pink mango frappe, blue drizzle, whipped cream, and sprinkles.

This looks like a complicated drink, but it’s surprisingly easy once you separate it into two parts.

Step 1: Make the Blue Drizzle

Start by melting the white chocolate chips until smooth. Stir in a small amount of warm milk until the chocolate is thin enough to drizzle.

Add your blue food coloring and a tiny pinch of citric acid.

The citric acid is powerful, so don’t go crazy with it. Start with just a little, taste it, and add more if you want a stronger sour flavor.

You want your blue syrup to be sweet with just enough tang to contrast with the fruity Frappuccino.

Set it aside while you make the pink portion.

Step 2: Make the Pink Frappuccino

Add the frozen mango pieces, whole milk, vanilla ice cream, ice cubes, and mango syrup to your blender.

Blend until everything is completely smooth and creamy.

Add a small amount of pink food coloring and blend again.

You want a bright pink color, but remember that you can always add more. It’s much harder to take it back out!

Step 3: Create the Blue Swirls

Now comes the fun part.

Take your prepared glass and drizzle the blue mixture around the inside.

Don’t worry about making it perfect.

In fact, I think the random streaks look better because every drink comes out a little different.

Turn the glass as you drizzle, so you get blue swirls all the way around.

Step 4: Add the Frappuccino

Slowly pour your pink Frappuccino into the prepared glass.

As the pink mixture hits the blue drizzle, you’ll immediately start getting that gorgeous pink-and-blue unicorn effect.

Step 5: Add the Whipped Cream

Finish with a generous swirl of whipped cream.

Add colorful sprinkles, pink sugar, blue sugar, or edible glitter if you want to make it extra fun.

Stick in a straw and enjoy your homemade Unicorn Frappuccino right away!

What Does a Unicorn Frappuccino Taste Like?

This isn’t just a vanilla milkshake with food coloring.

The combination of mango and creamy vanilla gives the drink a tropical, fruity flavor, while the tangy blue drizzle adds a little sour kick.

That’s what makes it so much fun.

You get creamy sweetness from the frappuccino, fruity flavors from the mango, and then little bursts of tartness whenever you hit one of those blue swirls.

As you stir the drink, the flavors and colors start mixing together.

It’s definitely sweet, but the sour drizzle keeps it interesting.

Can I Make the Blue Drizzle Without Citric Acid?

Yes.

Citric acid gives the drizzle that really noticeable tart flavor, but you don’t absolutely need it.

If you don’t have any, you can make a simple sweet blue drizzle instead.

You could also experiment with a tiny splash of lemon juice, although this can change the consistency of melted white chocolate, so add it carefully.

For kids who don’t love sour candy or tart flavors anyway, I’d probably just skip the citric acid.

Natural Food Coloring Options

If you don’t want to use traditional food coloring, there are a few different ways to create those fun unicorn colors.

For blue, try blue spirulina powder. It can create a gorgeous blue shade without regular blue food coloring.

For pink, pink dragonfruit powder is a great option. It creates a naturally vibrant pink color and fits perfectly with the tropical fruity flavors in this drink.

Just keep in mind that natural powders can slightly change the flavor and texture.

Can I Make Blue Yogurt Swirls Instead?

Absolutely!

If you don’t want to make a white chocolate drizzle, blue yogurt swirls are another fun option.

Mix a little vanilla Greek yogurt with blue food coloring or blue spirulina powder.

Drizzle the mixture around the inside of the glass before pouring in your pink layer.

It won’t taste exactly like the original Starbucks version, but it looks adorable and is especially good if you’re making these for kids.

Other Fun Ways to Make a Unicorn Frappuccino

One of the best things about homemade drinks is that you don’t have to follow Starbucks’ rules.

You can make it exactly how you like it.

Try swapping the mango for strawberries and adding a little strawberry syrup.

If you’re making this during the summer and have plenty of fresh fruit around, my Peach Burrata Salad is another one of my favorite easy summer recipes.

Add pink dragonfruit for a more tropical version.

Use coconut milk instead of whole milk and top it with homemade coconut whip for a dairy-free variation.

You could even add a little white mocha sauce to the blender for an extra sweet and creamy version.

There really isn’t one “right” way to make a unicorn drink at home.

Tips for the Best Homemade Unicorn Frappuccino

Use frozen mango. Fresh mango works, but frozen mango pieces help create that thick Frappuccino texture without needing quite as much ice.

Don’t add too much ice. Too many ice cubes can water down the fruity flavors.

Start with less food coloring. A tiny amount goes a long way.

Make the drizzle first. Once the frozen drink is blended, you’ll want to serve it quickly before it starts melting.

Chill your glass. Pop your glass into the freezer for a few minutes before assembling your drink. It helps everything stay colder longer.

Decorate right before serving. Whipped cream and sprinkles look their best when they’re added at the last minute.

Notes

  • Citric acid is strong, so start with a very small pinch. You can always add more.
  • If you're making this for younger kids, you can reduce or completely leave out the citric acid.
  • Make the blue drizzle before blending the frappuccino so your frozen drink doesn't sit around and melt.
  • For an extra fun finish, add edible glitter or colorful sugar on top.

Can I Make This Dairy-Free?

Yes!

Replace the whole milk with your favorite dairy-free milk. Coconut milk is especially good here because it goes so well with mango.

Use dairy-free vanilla ice cream in place of regular vanilla ice cream.

You’ll also need dairy-free white chocolate for the drizzle.

Finish everything with homemade coconut whip instead of regular whipped cream.

The result won’t be identical, but you’ll still get that fun pink-and-blue look.

Can Kids Have a Unicorn Frappuccino?

This homemade version can easily be made kid-friendly.

And if you’re always looking for something fun to make for the kids, check out my 25 Healthy After School Snacks for Kids for more easy ideas.

There’s no coffee in this recipe, so you don’t have to worry about adding espresso or caffeine.

For younger kids, I would personally make the blue drizzle less sour or leave out the citric acid completely.

You can also make smaller portions instead of serving an entire coffee-shop-sized drink.

Honestly, the decorating is probably half the fun for kids anyway. Put out sprinkles and let them decorate their own whipped cream.

Just prepare yourself for sprinkles everywhere.

Can I Make It Ahead of Time?

I wouldn’t recommend making the entire frappuccino ahead of time.

Like most frozen drinks, it’s best immediately after blending.

You can, however, prepare the blue drizzle ahead of time and keep it refrigerated. If it becomes too thick, gently warm it until it’s drizzleable again.

You can also portion your frozen mango pieces ahead of time so everything is ready to throw into the blender.

That makes this much easier if you’re preparing several drinks for a party.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino Still Available?

No. The original Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino was a limited-time drink rather than a permanent Starbucks menu item.

That’s exactly why learning how to make a copycat Unicorn Frappuccino at home is so much fun. You don’t have to wait for Starbucks to bring it back.

Does a Unicorn Frappuccino Have Coffee?

The original drink was a crème-based Frappuccino rather than a coffee Frappuccino, and this homemade recipe doesn’t contain coffee either.

That makes it an especially fun option for kids.

Can I Use Fresh Mango?

Yes, but frozen mango works better for creating a thick frozen consistency.

If you’re using fresh mango pieces, add a few additional ice cubes to compensate.

What Can I Use Instead of Mango Syrup?

If you can’t find mango syrup, you can leave it out and add a little extra mango.

You could also experiment with strawberry syrup for a strawberry-unicorn variation.

Can I Make This Without Vanilla Ice Cream?

Yes.

The vanilla ice cream makes my version extra creamy, but you can leave it out and increase the milk slightly.

The texture will be a little more like a traditional blended Frappuccino and less like a milkshake.
